Developed in 1849 by a Mr Jacobs of Chatham, Kent who some years later moved to Petworth House in West Sussex taking the apple with him. Local nurseryman Edward Bunyard introduced Lady Sudeley commercially in 1885 and renamed it after his best customer, the Sudeley Estate, who had just bought over half a million trees from him. A beautiful, large fruit with bold red stripes and pink flushing. It produces a fabulous sweet juice with a lingering, mellow aftertaste. The apple received an Award of Merit in 1884 at the Royal Horticultural Show.
